Estimate Extra-Hour Pay

Illustration of extended work hours, calculator, and pay summary.

Extra-Hour Estimate Formula

An extra-hour estimate uses four inputs: total hours, a selected threshold, an hourly rate, and a multiplier.

Extra-hour amount = hours above threshold x hourly rate x multiplier

Worked Example

  • Total hours: 47
  • Selected threshold: 40
  • Hourly rate: $22
  • Selected multiplier: 1.5
  • Hours above threshold: 7
  • Estimated extra-hour amount: 7 x $22 x 1.5 = $231

The example is based only on the selected inputs. Change the threshold or multiplier to model a different setup.

Compare Multipliers

A 1.0 multiplier keeps the base rate, 1.5 models time and a half, and 2.0 models double time. Use the multiplier that matches the estimate you want to test.

How to Review the Result

Check the source entries against the values shown in the calculator. Confirm the date, start time, end time, break minutes, hourly rate, threshold, and multiplier one field at a time.

Gross duration is the full time between start and end. Net duration is the amount left after the entered break is deducted. If those values do not match your expectation, correct the time or break entry before reviewing the final total.

Keep the Calculation Reproducible

When a result will be shared, record the inputs beside it. A clear note might include the pay period, shift dates, total break minutes, selected rate, and any extra-hour settings used.

For recurring work, use the same input format each time and keep each period separate. Recalculate after edits instead of adjusting the final number manually.
